Obituary: Daniel Russell Cooney —portfolio manager, long-time Noroton Yacht Club, Army veteran

Daniel Russell Cooney, 92, of Darien and Waldoboro, Maine, died on June 24.  Born in Brooklyn on Dec. 12, 1924, he was the son of Mae Bossert and Russell S. Cooney.  He grew up in Plandome, Long Island and in Waldoboro, attended Exeter Academy, and served in the U.S. Army in World War II in the European Theater.  After the war, he entered Yale University and graduated in 1950.  He worked as a securities analyst for Lord Abbett & Co. in New York City, and in 1973, he became portfolio manager of the newly established Lord Abbett Developing Growth Fund, one of the earliest funds to focus specifically on the over-the-counter market. After his retirement in 1987, he served as Trustee of Robertson Stephens Emerging Growth Fund.

Mr. Cooney  married the love of his life, Alice Knotts, on July 9, 1949, in Falmouth, Maine, and they spent 67 devoted years together between Darien and Waldoboro, raising two daughters, many Norwich terriers, and daylilies galore. His devotion to Alice, who predeceased him by nine months, was exemplified by the care he gave her over the last 25 years of her life, when she was suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. He was supported in her care by a team of women who, in turn, watched over and looked after him.  His daughters are grateful for each of them, they said.

He had an infectious smile and a curious nature that endeared him to all.  A long-standing member of the Noroton Yacht Club, he owned sailboats in numerous classes that included Lightnings, Sonars, and Ideal 18s. He shared his wife’s passion for antiques, but his interest had a nautical focus, embracing everything from marine paintings, decoys, scrimshaw, and early rigging and sailmakers tools that he appreciated as much for their history as for their craftsmanship and beauty.  His interests were vast and ever growing, ranging from planting a collection of rhododendrons and rare pines to showing Norwich Terriers and making wine. But most of all, he was a gentleman of the old school in the truest sense.

Mr. Cooney was predeceased by his three siblings, James S. Cooney, Barbara Cooney, and David C. Cooney.  He is survived by his daughters Rebecca T. Cooney, and her husband Tito Pizarro, of New York City, and Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen, and her husband George L. K. Frelinghuysen, also of New York City; and two grandsons, Henry O. H.  Frelinghuysen of Stamford,  and Russell S. C. Frelinghuysen of Asheville, North Carolina.

He will have a private family burial in Waldoboro in August.  A memorial service will be held in his honor on Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s Parish, 1864 Post Road, Darien.

Memorial, donations in Daniel’s memory may be made to St. Luke’s Parish, 1864 Post Road, Darien, CT 06820, or to Yale University, Development Office, 157 Church Street, New Haven, CT 06510-2100. www.lawrencefuneralhome.com

Obituary — Joseph Eugene Costello, 58, husband of Everything is Rosey owner, helped co-workers to safety on 9/11

Joseph Eugene (Joe) Costello, of Darien, Connecticut, passed away on Sunday, June 25, 2017. His wife and love of his life, Rosemary Peters Costello, beloved son Keane Thomas, and loyal and loving Welsh Springer Spaniels Fiona and Finnegan, survive him. He is also survived by his brother Michael from East Haddam, CT and 5 sisters-in-law and 2 brothers-in-law and 8 nieces and nephews.  His brother Jimmy and parents, Alice and Thomas Costello, predeceased him.

Joe was born on July 9, 1958 at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City, where coincidentally, Rosey, his wife of almost 25 years was born 18 months prior. The two shared a running joke that Rosey left a note for Joe in his hospital bassinette saying, “Call me when you grow up.” Joe and Rosey had their official first date on October 24, 1987 at a Japanese restaurant in New York. They were married on September 26, 1992 in Bay Head, NJ and welcomed their son Keane on June 30, 1994. The Costellos moved from New York to Darien in June 1996, closing on their home on Keane’s second birthday.

Raised in Crestwood, NY, Joe graduated from Iona Preparatory School. From there he headed to Fordham University. He transferred sophomore year to Georgetown University, where he majored in history, captained the Rugby Team, and forged friendships that lasted over 40 years. Three years of living the life of a Hoya wasn’t enough, so Joe returned to Georgetown Law to earn a Juris Doctor, and was admitted to the New York and Connecticut bar associations.

Joe joined JJ Kenny as a municipal bond trader and spent over 30 years with the firm. He was in the office on September 11th, where he, no surprise to those who knew him, assisted in the evacuation of his office and aided a colleague in the 44-flight descent to safety.  He retired from the firm in November 2015.

Newly retired, Joe found enjoyment and solace in time spent close to home and his family. He could be found at the New Canaan dog run with Fiona and Finn, perusing the shelves at the Darien Library or at Weed Beach reading the paper or his book group’s latest title.  He was part owner of the United Puett Starting Gate Business, the leading supplier of starting gates to every major racing venue in the United States. Joe made it a point to attend the Belmont Stakes and Saratoga as often as he could.  His adventurous spirit took him and Rosey to exotic destinations, including Argentina, Uruguay, Costa Rica, and much of Europe. They were planning a trip to Italy to celebrate what would have been their 25th wedding anniversary in September. Joe had recently dusted off his fishing rod and gear to share his passion for the sport with Keane.

Joe was loved by all who knew him for his kindness, humility, generosity and the genuine interest and pride he took in the accomplishments and success of those he loved. He beamed with pride whenever he talked about Rosey’s successful retail store, Everything is Rosey, and was most proud of Keane’s recent graduation from the College of Charleston.

Joe was a member of the St. Thomas More parish, Stamford Yacht Club and a former member of the New York Athletic Club. Joe will be remembered for his kind heart and warm smile.  His passing leaves an empty spot in our hearts and lives.

A wake will be held on Sunday, July 9th from 4-8pm at Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home ( next to the Knights of Columbus) 453 Shippan Avenue, Stamford (203) 359-9999. This would have been his 59th birthday.

A funeral mass will take place on Monday, July 10th at 10:30am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, located at 374 Middlesex Road in Darien, CT.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that Joe be remembered by a donation to

Obituary: Peter William Mason — devoted father, U.S. Marine veteran, Silver and Bronze Star, and Purple Heart recipient

$

Peter William Mason died peacefully on June 18, 2017, in Manchester Vermont, with his loyal black Labrador and wife at his side. Peter was a devoted father and grandfather (Grandpere) of ten. Peter was a 37 year resident of Ridgefield, Connecticut and then Rowayton, Connecticut before retiring to Weston, Vermont in 2004.

Peter was born in Hamilton, Ohio. His parents were William Mason, and Elizabeth Hall Mason, both of whom loved to fish which influenced Peter’s passion for fly fishing. Peter was five when his family moved to Shaker Heights, Ohio, where Peter often played catch after school with his next-door-neighbor, Bob Feller, the future Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher. In 1938, the Masons moved to Longmeadow, Massachusetts during great hurricane of 1938. From that experience, Peter gained an avid interest in weather that lasted a lifetime. Peter attended Classical High School in Springfield Mass where he played football. He also ran track because his football coach wanted him to stay in shape. Though football was his sport, he won the Massachusetts High School State Championship in both the 100 and 200 yard sprints. During World War II, he was a volunteer firefighter, an air warden, and annually raised an enormous victory garden. He spent his senior year at the Lenox Episcopal School for Boys in Lenox, Massachusetts which he despised. (Later, when asked if he would rather go back to prep school or Marine Corps Boot Camp, he emphatically chose Parris Island Boot Camp!).

In the fall of 1948, Peter attended Ohio Wesleyan University as journalism major. There, he enrolled in the United States Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Course, completing Officer Candidate School during the summers following his freshman and sophomore years. He was called to active duty (ironically during an American History class) in January 1950, and landed in the Republic of South Korea five days later. After some fierce fighting (he was in the second wave of the invasion of Seoul), he was ordered back to the US to attend aviator training at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida. He returned to Korea as a close air support officer in the 2nd Marine Air Craft Wing As a forward air controller, during the infamous “war on the hills”, Peter, along with his radioman L.Cpl. Gino Fusillo, and their rifleman Sgt. George Washington Nero, would be dropped behind enemy lines, call in airstrikes on the target. (It was during this period that Peter developed his enthusiasm for Peter Paul Mounds candy bars, because he could keep them in his fatigue pants pockets where they would just squish when he hit the ground for cover, instead of bruising his legs.). As the war settled into a long, bloody stalemate, Peter earned three Purple Heart Medals and two Bronze Stars. When he bravely had to call an airstrike on his own position because his unit was being overrun, Peter earned a Silver Star for valor in combat. Peter was honored to have the medal pinned on his fatigues by the legendary Marine Corps General Chesty Puller. Among Peter’s Marine memories… In February 1953 he was at K-13 airbase in Suwon when Marine Pilot Ted Williams landed his flaming Panther aircraft to the great relief of Peter and his fellow Red Sox fans everywhere. Peter also recalled when he was on leave, he met President Harry Truman who was out walking one morning near the Whitehouse (The President often snuck away from his Secret Service for a walk.). The President asked Peter and his friend who were both in uniform to escort him to a nearby doughnut shop, where Peter purchased a chocolate donut for President who forgot he didn’t carry a wallet on his walks.

After his Marine Corps service, Peter met and married Faith Mason, they moved their young family to Marblehead Massachusetts. While there, Peter began his career in publishing, working for McCall’s magazine in Boston as New England Sales Manager. In 1966, Peter and Faith moved their family to Somers, NY and eventually Ridgefield, Connecticut where they raised their four children. At McCall’s New York headquarters, Peter shared an office with the magazine’s fiction editor, Joseph Heller, who frequently asked Peter to edit the magazine’s monthly short story, because Joseph was totally absorbed working on his novel (Catch 22).

In a 1968 Peter began working for Meredith Publishing on Better Homes and Gardens Magazine, as New England Sales Manager, managing diverse advertising categories from tourism to china and silver to home building and even ladies lingerie. In 1985, Peter was named Director of the Meredith Travel Marketing Group he grew sales from $800 thousand to $21.7 million. During that period, Peter served as president of the Travel Industry of America, whose Board awarded him their highest achievement award. As a travel expert, Peter was regularly quoted in USA Today, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and many travel industry publications. Peter also frequently appeared on the Today Show, Good Morning America, the CNN Morning Show, and the American Public Media radio program Marketplace. Peter was a keynote speaker at 48 major travel industry events. Peter retired from Better Homes in 2004 after a 50 year career in publishing.

Peter later married, Marguerite Kennedy in 1991 and soon after retired to Vermont. Peter was a member of the Wantastiquet Trout Club in Weston, VT and always carried a collapsible fishing rod on his business trips- just in case! Peter wore red socks every day in retirement in allegiance to his baseball team. He also was also an ardent fan of the New England Patriots, as a season ticket holder when they were the “Boston Patriots “ in their first season in the American Football League

Peter was an avid book reader and traveler with limitless intellectual curiosity and spirit of adventure. He and his wife traveled to England and France annually. It was his France trips that earned him the name Grandpere to his 10 grandchildren. Their trips included visits to WWI and WWII military cemeteries and memorials, including on multiple visits to the Invasion Beaches in Normandy, Point du Hoc, and the Normandy American Cemetery

In addition to his wife Marguerite, Peter is survived by survived by his four children: Steven William Mason, his fiancé Courtney Grier and Peter’s newest grandchild Cooper William (born on March 20, 2017), Steven’s daughters Elizabeth and Lauren and their mother Paula Mason, all of Darien Connecticut, his second son Scott Frederick Mason, Scott’s wife Jennifer Mason, and their three daughters, Heather, Tori, and Lindsay and their son David, of Ridgefield Connecticut, Peter’s daughter Heidi Mason Black , her husband Peter Black,, and their three sons Hunter, Craig, and Charlie Black of Park City Utah and his youngest son Craig Hall Mason of Chelsea, MA.

Peter’s funeral will be a Eucharistic Service at Zion Episcopal Church at 11:00am on July 8, 2017. A celebration of Peter’s life will follow in the church hall.

Peter asked that any contributions in appreciation of his service to our county be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, whose mission is to provide, in partnership with the Navy and Marine Corps, financial, educational, and other need-based assistance to active-duty and retired Sailors and Marines , their eligible family members, and survivors. Richard W. Artis, a resident of Darien (CT) since 1964, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 4th, 2017. He was 96 years old.

Born in Bethlehem PA, he was the son of the late Alfred and Ruth Forker Artis.  He was a 1949 graduate of Moravian College and Theological Seminary where he served as chairman of the student board of publications and edited the college newspaper.

In high school he had his own licensed ham radio station and confesses to being the nuisance who caused interference in the neighbors’ reception of “The Green Hornet”, “Amos and Andy” and other nightly broadcasts of the 1930’s.

A lifelong music hobbyist, Artis was self-taught in harmony, composition and orchestration and had works played by several symphony orchestras in the East.

He was an infantry officer in World War II, serving 3 ½ years, and took part in the Allied liberation and occupation of Italy.  A member of the Noroton Presbyterian Church in Darien, he twice served as a parish deacon.

Obituary: Alice W. Schweitzer — Former musical director and longtime Darien resident

Alice W. Schweitzer, 89, a resident of Darien, Connecticut for 47 years, died peacefully in Stamford Hospital, on July 2, 2017, after a brief illness. During her final hours the beloved matriarch was surrounded by the members of her family, and retained her famous sense of humor to the very end. Alice is survived by her husband of 62 years, Fritz L. Schweitzer, Jr., and their children: Helen Sterling and her spouse, Drake, of Novato, California, Mary Alice Canaday and her husband, Ed, of Darien, and Fritz L. Schweitzer III and his wife, Meghan, also of Darien. She adored her six grandchildren, Seth, Shea, Allie, Declan, Brennan and Remi.

Alice was born in Youngstown, Ohio, the daughter of Judge Clifford M. Woodside and Effie (Bloom) Woodside. Alice had a lifelong love of music. When she was just 16 years old, she played saxophone in a male professional swing band at the Blue Moon Ballroom in Tucson, Arizona, replacing the young men serving in the Second World War. Later, Alice and her two sisters, Mary and Jane, enjoyed a professional singing career as the “Woodside Sisters” trio. Their billings included stints on the Arthur Godfrey and Ed Sullivan TV shows, as well as night club and theater appearances throughout the country, including the RKO Palace Theater in New York City. The Woodside Sisters trio eventually retired as marriages and raising families took center stage. Alice remained active in music, however, initially joining the Sweet Adelines, a regional barbershop chorus, and later joining and then directing the Connecticut Choraleers. Under her direction, the Choraleers put on several professional-grade performances in Darien, under the auspices of the Darien Arts Council. Alice also performed as part of the “Swing Fever” quartet, which included Linda Van Norstrand, Cathy Gale and Fred Catto. The “Swing Fever” group performed with the Tony Lavorgna band and appeared at theaters in the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions.

Alice enjoyed the outdoors and, during her younger days, was an accomplished skier, sailor and scuba diver. Many also claim she made the world’s best cherry pie. She will be dearly missed.

Services will be private, limited to family members.

For those interested in making a charitable contribution in Alice’s memory, the family suggests the Stamford Hospital Foundation, 1351 Washington Blvd. Ste 202, Stamford, CT 06902 (stamfordhospitalfoundation.org).

Obituary: Frances Chandler Travis — Editor and author; beloved by family

Frances Chandler Travis, 97, of Darien and Vero Beach, FL, died on July 6, 2017 (her daughter Deborah Martin Travis’s birthday.) Born in Chicago on July 1st, 1920, she was the daughter of Milton Evans Chandler and Marion Maus Chandler, and the older sister of James M. and Carol Chandler Rowland. She grew up in Indiana and Birmingham, MI, attended Stoneleigh College in Rye, NH, then moved to Buffalo, NY, with her sister Carol, where she was employed as an advertising director for a large local department store.

She then moved to New York City, where she worked in advertising for Burlington Industries in an office on the 4th floor of the Empire State Building, and met and eventually married Charles “Bud” Merwin Travis on November 25th, 1948, with whom she lived happily until his death in January of 2016. They had two children, Peter Chandler Travis, a musician (wife, Marybeth Travis), and Deborah Martin Travis, a nurse. Deborah had two children with her husband, John Willis: Jeremy Willis, an artist, musician, and real estate broker; and Lucy Willis, a physician.

She even got to know and love her great grandchildren, Redding and Walker Willis (sons of Jeremy and Joelle Willis) and Charles Brizzi (son of Julian Brizzi and Lucy Willis, and named for Frances’s husband, Charles.)

In later years, she was an editor and book condenser for Reader’s Digest, and worked with many well-known authors of the day; and in her late seventies, she decided to write her own books, “Finders Keepers”, “Deadlines”, and “Under the Influence” published between 1989 and ’93 under the name Elizabeth Travis. Despite the fact that she had never been much of a mystery reader, all her published books were entries in her own Ben and Carrie Porter mystery series, because she thought mysteries more commercial than most genres (unfortunately her first novel, “The Island”, was never published.)

She had a disarming, light touch, and a way of endearing herself to most folks effortlessly, on contact, that never left her. She somehow managed to seem almost entirely melodrama free; even in later years, when she and Bud lost friend after friend to the ravages of time, she seemed never to dwell, no matter how much she loved them, instead accepting all life’s heartbreaks along with its gifts, her memory never failing for a second.

She found in Bud someone who adored her whole-heartedly and without question his whole life, someone with whom she not only shared a wonderful family and an amazing succession of close and devoted friends, but with whom she traveled the world extensively for decades.

She left this life as she lived it, on her own precise schedule, following her 97th birthday celebration with her loving family. She passed peacefully in her own bed, without fuss or drama, a gentle exit from a life well lived by a beautiful, charming woman, both children by her side.

She’ll be missed like crazy; they both will.

A memorial service will be held in her honor on August 5th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke’s Parish, 1864 Post Road, Darien, CT, where she will be interred next to her husband; donations in her memory may be made to the charity she worked most for, the Mental Health Association in Indian River County, 820 37th Place, Vero Beach, FL 32960 / 772 569 9788 / http://www.mhairc.org/

Richard Alexander Booth, a Norwalk resident for nearly 60 years and dedicated community volunteer, died on July 19th at Norwalk Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Booth is survived by his three children and their spouses Richard A. Booth, Jr. and his wife Deborah Fagan of Shorewood, WI, Lorene E. Bora and her husband Douglas Bora, Jr. of Darien, CT and David Fisk Booth and his wife Debra Booth of New Milford, CT; five grandchildren Abigail Booth Cassell and her husband James, Scott Bora and his fiancé Spencer Jardine, Nathaniel Booth, Elizabeth (“Libby”) Bora, and Juliann Booth as well as two great granddaughters Ellowyen Booth and Riley Bora. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Fisk Booth. He was also predeceased by brothers John F. Booth Jr. and George Booth, and sister Norabelle Doherty.

Born on July 17, 1922, he was the son of Scottish immigrants John F. Booth and Nora Anderson Booth of Pittsburgh, PA. Following high school graduation, he was employed by Pitney Bowes Postage Meter Company, for which he would remain employed for 49 years. His employment with Pitney Bowes went on hiatus from 1942 until 1945 when Booth joined the Army Air Forces and served in the South Pacific during World War II.

In 1950 he was married to Elizabeth (“Betty”), and they began their family in Rochester, NY.  The Booths moved to Norwalk in 1957, briefly living in Shorefront Park and then moving to the home they shared in West Norwalk for over 50 years.

While raising his family, Mr. Booth, known to his friends as Dick, attended night school and earned his Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Bridgeport, graduating in 1963. Throughout his years in Norwalk, he was an active community volunteer attaining many leadership positions in the organizations that he served. He was a Scoutmaster for Norwalk Troop 19 from 1964 to 1966 and later served as commissioner of the Sasqua District of Boy Scouts. Mr. Booth was appointed to the Norwalk Fair Rent Commission in 1985 and became its chair in 1995, serving in that capacity until 2008. He was a board member and later president of the Norwalk Historical Society. Mr. Booth also served on the boards of Norwalk Methodist Church and the Fairfield County Computer Users Group. A collector, Booth owned a number of early computers, and rode his vintage Triumph motorcycle with “The Lemmings” into his eighties.

The Booths were avid travelers. Purchasing a Cox Camper in 1965, the family embarked on the first of three ten week coast to coast camping trips. Over many summers, Dick, Betty and the children travelled the United States and Canada with the camper in tow, seeing new sights and visiting family and friends along the way. In their retirement years, Dick and Betty set off to see the world, travelling extensively throughout Europe, Scandinavia and the Middle East, as well as many of the countries of the former U.S.S.R., China and India. Remarkably, the Booths’ travels took them to nearly all of the 50 states and 39 countries/regions.

Mr. Booth will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather. He was an intellectually curious and gregarious individual who was sincerely interested in everybody and everything. In his last year as a resident of Atria Darien, he availed himself of the many activities and learning opportunities the community had to offer, and was proud to have started a chess club. He was teaching the art of the game to fellow residents, staff and even a few Darien High School students.  The night before he fell ill, he was reading about the history of the opera in anticipation of attending a program about “Aida” and famed opera singer Leontyne Price the next day.

Calling hours will be held at Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Avenue, Norwalk, CT on Friday, July 28 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will take place at the Cornerstone Church, 718 West Ave., Norwalk on Saturday, July 29 at 10:30 a.m. followed by a burial service at Riverside Cemetery, 81 Riverside Avenue, Norwalk.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lifetime Learners Institute at Norwalk Community College, 188 Richards Avenue, West Campus Room W102, Norwalk, CT 06854.  For directions or to leave an online condolence, please go to www.magnerfuneralhome.com

Christopher Anthony Poth, 69, a long-time resident of Darien and recent resident of Stamford, passed away on July 12, 2017 at Stamford Hospital with his family by his side. He was born on April 27, 1948 to Eleanor Haggerty Poth and Harry A. Poth. He is survived by his wife, Charity; his children, Charlotte and Henry; and grandson, Keaton. He will also be remembered by his brothers Jeremy Poth and Stephen Sheils.

Christopher (‘’Chris”) was one of the last true gentlemen to grace this earth. He lived his life with politeness, civility, kindness and respect as his moral code. Chris would regale his colleagues and friends with his incredible knowledge of history, different cultures, foreign affairs, and current events. Always at the ready to lend a helping hand, Chris went out of his way to help others in what he called “the brotherhood of man.”

Christopher spent many years working in real estate and insurance and was involved in many non-profit endeavors. With many interests, he was a member of the World Affairs Forum, The Ambassador’s Round Table as well as the Asia Society, China Institute and Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs. He was a graduate of Middlesex School and Rollins College.

A student of the world, Chris loved learning and sought it out wherever he could. Whether in a lecture series, his daily perusal of the New York Times and New York Post, or in-depth conversations with others, Chris was the perpetual scholar. Yet, he had within him a great love of the theatre and could often be found singing to his family or acting out scenes from his favorite movies and plays.

September will mark a month of remembrance for Christopher. His family invites relatives and friends to a Memorial service that will be celebrated on Saturday, September 16th at 2pm at St. Luke’s Church, 1864 Post Road in Darien, CT.

In lieu of flowers, please give a gift in honor of Chris’s memory. Please visit this website: https://www.gofundme.com/thepoths-tragicevents for more information.
