Gail Ord

Beloved wife, mother, sibling & friend, Gail Brebner Ord, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on April 11, 2017.  The way Gail handled a difficult cancer diagnosis was a role model for us all — understanding, accepting and brave.

Born on April 28, 1943, Gail was the oldest daughter of the late Frederic Brebner and Doreen Dann.  Gail grew up in Toronto and Montreal, and graduated from John Rennie High School and Macdonald College at McGill University.  She married Nicholas Ord on August 19, 1967, and together they raised two children, Jennifer and Christopher, in both Canada and the United States.

Gail has resided in Darien, CT since 1981 (with a brief two-years abroad in Puerto Rico).  In 1987, Gail became a licensed real estate broker, working with William Pitt, Merrill Lynch, Prudential and, most recently, Coldwell Banker.  She has confidently helped numerous families find their homes in Darien and Fairfield County, receiving accolades such as International Diamond Society and the President’s Circle (top 2% in sales worldwide).

Gail was an active member of the Darien community and Tokeneke Club.  She was an avid bridge player and an ABCL Bridge Life Master.  She was a figure skating judge and fan who attended national and international events whenever possible.  Most importantly, she had an incredible spirit and touched the lives of the many people she knew with her humor, kindness and courage.

Gail is survived by her husband of 49 years, Nick Ord, her daughter Jennifer Ord Bonadio and husband Bill Bonadio of Great Falls, VA, her son Chris Ord and wife Jennifer Raikes of Los Angeles, CA.  A great joy in her life were her five grandchildren Alex, Claire & Madelyn Bonadio, and Audrey & Dorothy Ord.  She was also tremendously close with her three siblings, Tony Brebner, Mallory Tabah and Deane Bissonnette.

A private memorial service was held for immediate family at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Whittingham Cancer Center in Norwalk Hospital, 34 Maple St. Norwalk, CT 06850 (http://www.norwalkhospital.org/departments/cancer-care-at-norwalk-hospital/give-now)

He met Karen at a Kentucky Derby party in Manhattan, and they married in 1966. Jim and Karen continued the party throughout their 50 years of marriage. After they retired, they began spending summers surrounded by friends and their growing family on beautiful Lake Massawippi in North Hatley, Quebec.

Jim adored being a father and was endlessly proud of his daughters’ professional accomplishments, expertise, and talents. Family and friends will remember him for his wisdom, dance moves, charades prowess, and relentless sense of humor (affectionately known as “pun-ishment”), among many other things. He was a kind, caring person and a devoted dog owner. In addition to trout fishing, playing golf, and listening to music, Jim enjoyed boating, and he always said that his first job—as a launchman at the local yacht club when he was a teenager—was his favorite.

Editorial: It’s about time to revisit the Darien High School student commitment policy

Darien High School

This week, Schools Superintendent Dan Brenner brought forward a proposal on revamping the current commitment those in Darien High School extra curricular activities currently sign.

A new commitment? Darien superintendent, board discuss revamping school substance abuse policy.

The commitment requires those who sign it to not drink or use illegal substances or being in situations that include the same or otherwise suffer suspensions from that activity for a certain amount of days.

Dr. Brenner thinks the current commitment, while well intended, is not working.

He’s right.

It isn’t working because enforcement is selective and inconsistent.

It isn’t working because it isn’t having any long-term effect on the levels of teen drinking in town.

Might it also be that it isn’t working because it isn’t always in the athletic departments or teams best interest to enforce it?

This is not to say only athletes might violate the commitment — by any means.

But it’s likely that in some cases those who might violate the commitment could also be the best performing athletes on their respective teams.

And who would want to jeopardize the next game because the best performers are suspended for two weeks? Who would want to be responsible for getting those best performers suspended before the next big game and suffer social repercussions from their peers?

This is hypothetical, but the fact remains the commitment isn’t working. The high school’s current approach to enforcing it isn’t working.

Dr. Brenner says it isn’t a superintendent problem, it’s a community problem — and he’s right about that too.

The only way for this community effort to work is if we all pick up our oars and move this ship forward to produce a better, more effective policy.

And maybe take a look at the way our community pressures our young people to excel in all they do at any cost.

Even more importantly, our community needs to make our own commitment — a serious commitment —  to lead by a better and more effective example in our adults, teachers, coaches and parents.

Obituary: Kevin Joseph Cassidy — “Until we meet again”

Kevin Joseph Cassidy of Darien, Connecticut went peacefully home to God surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday morning, May 10, after a long and bravely fought battle with lung cancer.

Kevin was the devoted husband of Jacqueline Sinon Cassidy for twenty-five years and the loving father of his sons Kevin, Michael, and Brendan, and beloved daughter, Colleen.

Born on October 1, 1956, to Eleanor and Joseph Cassidy in Red Bank, New Jersey, Kevin grew up on the Jersey Shore with his two brothers Padraic and Brendan and his sister Kathleen.  It was there that he developed his love of family, his great capacity for friendship, and his love of the ocean.  While he was in high school, he moved with his family to Chevy Chase, Maryland, and he graduated from Good Counsel High School in Wheaton, Maryland.

Kevin graduated from Boston College where he was an Economics major and an avid Rugby player.  His love for the Heights and his BC brother and sister Eagles was lifelong.

He was an alumnus of Fordham Law School, where he was a member of the Law Review, and he was admitted to the New York and California Bar Associations. He practiced law at White & Case’s New York and Stockholm offices and at Skadden, Arps, Meagher & Flom, first in New York and later in Los Angeles.  Most recently, he served as General Counsel and Executive Vice President at Rafferty Holdings, LLC.

Kevin and his wife Jackie enjoyed beautiful years in Los Angeles, Sydney, and Hong Kong.  When his career bought him back to New York, they settled on Birch Road in Darien.  It was here they celebrated the births of their children, and Kevin took great pride in the town he loved so well, Darien!

Kevin was a devoted, endlessly supportive neighborhood dad and relished the joys of fatherhood.  When his children were young, Kevin never tired of lacing up their hockey skates.  The Darien Ice Rink became his favorite destination.  Learning and loving the game himself, he excitedly stood at the glass taking in games and working the clock.  He loved the Darien Youth Hockey Program and served on the board of the Darien Youth Hockey Organization for five years.

In addition, Kevin was also an enthusiastic supporter of Darien Little League – a dedicated baseball coach to his sons and other boys in the program, and he later helped coach Colleen and other little girls in softball.

A former Boy Scout, Kevin guided his sons in Scouting, serving as an Assistant Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 53 in Darien.  He loved canoe trips, ski trips, and camping trips, especially the famous annual Klondike Camp Out in the snow.  He devoted many hours as the Sporting Goods Chair for the annual Boy Scout Tag Sale and glowed with pride when troop members – including his sons Michael and Brendan – became Eagle Scouts.

Kevin was a member of Saint Thomas More Parish.  He was a man of deep faith and a beautiful example to his children.

He and his family spent unforgettable summers on Shelter Island, New York.

No one who got in the boat while Kevin was at the helm didn’t learn to water ski!

Those summers golfing with his children at Gardiner’s Bay Country Club and taking endless swims in West Neck Bay were some of the best times of his life.

Whether he was heading off with his kids early on a Saturday morning for a day-trip to the ski slopes or teeing off when the sun came up at the Country Club of Darien, Kevin loved his life and lived it to the fullest with enthusiasm, a generous heart, a sense of humor, and uncompromising integrity.

Kevin took great pride in the town of Darien, knowing this community as home.  To him the great people of Darien were not just friends they were family.

Kevin is survived by his beloved wife Jacqueline, his sons Kevin, Michael, and Brendan, and his daughter Colleen.  He is also survived by his brother Brendan Cassidy of College Park, Maryland and his sister Kathleen Cassidy of Longmont, Colorado.  His brother Padraic passed away in 2009.

The family will receive friends at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien on Tuesday, May 16, from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Saint Thomas More Church, 374 Middlesex Road, Darien on Wednesday, May 17, at 10:30 am.  Kevin will be buried at the Cemetery of Our Lady of the Isle, Shelter Island, NY, after a family service on Thursday morning.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Andrew Shaw Memorial Trust (an organization that supports Darien Boy Scouts) PO Box 2315, Darien, CT 06820 or to the Darien EMS-Post 53, PO Box 2066, Darien, CT 06820.
