Patricia Otis Cook

Dr. Patricia Otis Cook, 74, of Darien, CT, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2018 following complications of pancreatic cancer. Dr. Cook was an exceedingly well-regarded clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist who served the community over an astounding 43 years of practice at her offices in Darien and Bridgeport. She was a brilliant, loving mother and beloved grandmother.

Patricia was born in Fulton, NY to Charles Robert Otis, Jr. and Helen McNeill Otis; a star student, she was valedictorian of her high school and a dazzling pianist. She then moved to Cambridge, MA to attend Radcliffe; she graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1965 with a B.A. in Social Relations, then in 1967 received her M.Ed. in School Psychology and her Ed.D. in Counseling Psychology in 1970. Although she completed her pre- and post-doctoral internships at Yale, all three of her degrees were from Harvard University.

Dr. Cook’s career was one of tremendous professional distinction. In her private practice, she specialized in individual and couples therapy and made an enormous yet quiet contribution to the lives of countless Fairfield County citizens. As a consulting psychologist for the Stamford Police Department and for the Department of Corrections’ Norwalk N.E.O.N. program over many years, she selflessly served the needs of those on all sides of the law.

Dr. Cook was a life member of the American Psychological Association, a fellow of the Connecticut Psychological Association, and adjunct faculty for the Department of Psychiatry at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, CT. Ever the student, Dr. Cook pursued post-graduate training in neuropsychology at the Fielding Institute of NYU, obtaining her certificate in neuropsychology in 2000.

Patricia’s sharp intellect was no accident; she had a tireless work ethic and was an avid reader, both traits she passed on to her children (who might describe their mother additionally as a feisty grammarian and armchair lexicographer). She traveled increasingly in her later years, visiting huge swathes of Europe and parts of Central America, though no one would accuse her of being an adventurous eater.

Patricia is survived by her daughter Meredith (Lander), son-in-law Ian, and their daughter Elizabeth of Trumbull; her son Justin and daughter-in-law Holly of Portland, Oregon, and their children Wrigley and Wyatt.

There will be visiting hours at Edward Lawrence Funeral Home in Darien on Friday, May 25, from 5 to 8 p.m. Family, friends, and anyone else whose lives have been touched by Dr. Cook are invited to join us for a celebration of her life on Saturday, May 26 at St. Luke’s Church in Darien at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Post 53, Person-to-Person of Darien, or the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research.

William “Bill” Brown Shepard, Jr.

William “Bill” Brown Shepard, Jr.

William “Bill” Brown Shepard, Jr., 71, of Darien, CT and Naples, FL passed away suddenly on Tuesday, May 29th surrounded by his loved ones after complications from immunotherapy treatment for recently diagnosed metastatic melanoma.

Bill was born in Summit, New Jersey to William and Mary Shepard. He graduated from The Pingry School and Wesleyan University where he had a long high school and college swimming career. He passed on a deep love of competitive and recreational swimming to his children and grandchildren, and any Shepard family vacation always included being on the water.

It was during college where he met his loving wife of 49 years, Midge, who came back the night they met and said to her friends “this is the first man I could consider marrying.” After college they were married before Bill served a year in Vietnam as an officer stationed at a riverboat base. He returned home safely as a decorated Navy Vietnam combat veteran.

He then received his MBA from Columbia Business School and went on to have a fascinating international banking career that brought him and his family around the world. During his 40 year career he embraced many cultures throughout Asia and the Middle East. He started at Manufacturers Hanover in New York City and later transferred with his family to Tokyo, Japan. They returned to the US where he worked at Irving Trust Bank before another international assignment in Saudi Arabia at National Commercial Bank. He later returned and worked at Gulf International Bank in New York City. He concluded his career in Houston as the head of US operations for Riyad Bank and retired in 2014.

Bill’s greatest pride and joy was his family and his life revolved around them. He was immensely proud of the adults his children have become. He adored his five grandchildren.

He led a life of great joy and enthusiasm and found so many pleasures in living his life fully. He enjoyed boating, gardening (and then frequently moving each plant in his garden to find its perfect spot, much to the amusement of his family), attending sporting events for his children and grandchildren, reading about history and countless other topics, being active in his church and volunteer communities, and observing shore life on the beach in Naples. He was very active right until his passing and cherished his daily swims, bike rides, and beach walks with Midge.

Bill was a shining light of love, positive attitude, gratitude and optimism that was contagious and will be sorely missed. He recognized every day the many blessings he had in his life, including being the friend of many wonderful people. His outgoing and uplifting personality gave him a unique ability to connect with and touch people from all walks of life. He loved meeting people and to him strangers were just friends he hadn’t met yet.

He also found deep personal satisfaction and enjoyment in helping others, especially sponsoring, mentoring, and supporting those with substance abuse addiction, and volunteering in countless other ways. He was particularly proud of his most recent volunteer role in Naples, FL where he worked with troubled youth at New Beginnings, a remarkable military influenced education program.

Bill was an active member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Darien, CT and Trinity-by-the-Cove Episcopal Church in Naples, FL. He was a member of the Country Club of Darien and the Darien Boat Club.

A proud husband, father, and grandfather who will be missed beyond belief, he is survived by his wife, Midge, and their three children, two daughters-in-law and five grandchildren: Trip and Tracy Shepard (Grace, Conor, Eric) of Darien, CT; Jay and Courtney Shepard (Jay and Blake) of Litchfield, CT; and Susan Shepard of New York, NY. He also leaves behind two brothers, Dick Shepard of Holland, MI and David Shepard of Kingston, MA.

A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Darien, CT on Saturday, June 9th at 4:30pm. There will be another memorial service at Trinity-by-the-Cove Episcopal Church in Naples, FL in the fall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests you consider donating in Bill’s name to St. Luke’s Parish, 1864 Post Rd, Darien, CT 06820, https://www.saintlukesdarien.org/give-online; or New Beginnings Naples (care of Captain Peltz), 3710 Estey Avenue, Naples, FL 34104, http://www.collierschools.com/domain/202.

William W. Helman III

William W. Helman III

William W. Helman III died on Saturday, June 2 peacefully in his home at Meadow Ridge in Redding, CT.

Bill was a 50+ year employee of Smith Barney Harris Upham, having joined in 1954 and serving as Managing Director, Senior Vice President, Chief Economist and Chair of the Investment Policy Committee throughout his tenure. Bill began his career as the computer research analyst, during a period of time when most people had never heard of a computer.

The chief delight for him in his work was analyzing and forecasting anything to do with the economy — writing weekly on investment trends, speaking at research conferences, and even inventing a predictive tool called the “Monetary Pressure Index” which correlated the relationship between stock prices and monetary policy. Bill was also a longtime member of the National Business Economic Issues Council (NBEIC) and always looked forward to attending the quarterly meetings.

Bill was a graduate of Cornell University, earning a BA in Economics in 1950 and an MBA in 1954. In between, he served in the Sixth Fleet of the US Navy. Upon return from the service, Bill almost completed the PhD curriculum in Economics at New York University. He was a real economics nerd.

Bill, who grew up in Greensburg, PA, was a longtime resident of Darien, CT and enjoyed careful attention to his lawn, dabbling in golf and tennis, music and gin gibsons at the Tokeneke Beach Club, sailing the Long Island Sound, perfecting the burger in his backyard and spending time with his family and friends.

Bill is survived by his wife Susan Early Helman, and his three children from his first wife, Nancy Solakian Helman (predeceased) — William W. Helman IV, Eliza J. Kraft, and Rebecca S. Helman, and stepdaughter Edwina Annicelli. In addition, Bill has seven grandchildren — Rachel Gerli, Aleah Vickers, Julia Hope Quigley, Beatrice P. Helman, William W. Helman V, Katie Annicelli and Casey Annicelli.

The family will hold private services.

Mary DiRollo, a resident of Norwalk, CT, passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2018 at Norwalk Hospital.

Born on January 31, 1931 in Port Chester, NY, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine Alonzo of Port Chester, NY.

Mary graduated in 1948 from Port Chester High School in Port Chester, NY. She worked as an executive and legal secretary for many years and then was co-owner of two food establishments with her husband, Joseph DiRollo.

Mary was a devoted wife and mother whose family meant everything to her. She loved life and was happiest when surrounded by family and her many friends. She was a compassionate soul who was always at-the-ready with a helping hand for anyone in need. She loved people — and oh how she loved music and dancing…especially doing ‘The Hustle’ to Barry White’s “You’re My First, My Last, My Everything.”

Her absence will leave a permanent void in the hearts and souls of her loving family — Joseph, Cheryl, Mark & Dana. Mom, you were the best mother we could have ever hoped for — always loving and always there for us, no matter the day or time — giving your all and then some without a moment’s hesitation. We will love and miss you always and hold you in our hearts forever.

Constance Mary (Connie) Coventry

We celebrate the life of Constance Mary (Connie) Coventry (1932-2018), wife of Kenneth Coventry, mother of Gary and Sandy Coventry, grandmother of Owen Coventry, with these loving memories.

Connie spent half her life in Australia and half in the U.S. She and Ken and the family moved between the two countries several times. She and Ken, Gary and Sandy also lived in London for 4 years. They traveled the world extensively with many stops in Europe and game reserves in Africa.

Connie was married to Ken for 65 years and is the mother to their 2 children — Gary who was born in Australia, and Sandy who was born in New York. Connie and Ken were members of the Noroton Yacht Club for 45 years. They sailed the Ensign Platypus most of that time, frequently during the week and on racing weekends. Connie was an active DCA member and enjoyed painting class and loved nature and flower arranging for many years.

In retirement, Connie and Ken bought a residence in San Diego and spent winters there, and summers in Darien ever since. In San Diego, they were active in the Zoo, Wild Animal Park and Sea World. They enjoyed many walks on the beach, where Connie loved bird watching and particularly the Sanderlings. For many years they traveled back to Australia for long vacations until the trip became too arduous.

Connie was known for her kind, gentle spirit, and an example for those who loved her.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 4PM.

David Ludwig

David Ludwig

Born on June 25, 1942, David Ludwig was a lifelong resident of Connecticut. He died Friday, June 15th at home after a long illness.

During his wide and varied career, Dave worked at Sprite Island Yacht Club, Santella Electric, D&H Construction, and Malkin Construction. For more than thirty years, Dave started his day with his breakfast crew of Howie and Johnny and other old friends at their favorite: Jake’s in Darien.

Dave was a man of Renaissance talents. He loved to create art and music. As a teenager, he was in a band that played the Rowayton and Darien party circuit. He made pottery and welded metal sculptures. Dave was a diehard boater (sailing and motor). He was a founding member of the Rowayton Yacht Club at Hickory Bluff. Every summer, he could be found on the water: mooring in Zeigler’s Cove or piloting a support boat for the Lighthouse to Lighthouse Race along the Norwalk Islands, while his wife rowed.

Dave was always ready for a project or an adventure. Dave would help friends and family with anything from building backyard decks, or piloting a houseboat from Florida to Connecticut, to helping a teenager get a summer job. Those who knew Dave treasured his never-ending conversations over desserts about fixing broken cars or sharing the latest scientific news and innovations. He was so loved and will be missed by many.

Dave is survived by his son, Clayton Ludwig; his wife, Mary Ellen Flaherty-Ludwig; his siblings, Mike, Kenny, and Schatzi Ludwig; and his step-daughters, Jen and Erin Cramm.

Calling hours will be 4-8 pm, Monday, June 18 at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road in Darien.

In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to Regional Hospice, 30 Milestone Road, Danbury, CT 06810.
