Joan E. McDonnell (nee Gallagher), beloved wife of the late Bernard J. McDonnell, died on January 16 at her home in Darien surrounded by her family.

Joan was born to party, entering the world on New Year’s Eve in 1932, daughter to Ida and Alonzo Gallagher in The Bronx. She graduated from Saint Simon Stock High School and worked in Manhattan at Equitable Life where she met her future husband Bernie. Following his return from deployment during the Korean War, the sweethearts were married and raised a family in Bethpage, Long Island, where Joan worked for 25 years as a high school administrator. The McDonnell home in Long Island was a frequent gathering place for their many close friends and extended Irish family, always filled with wonderful smells coming from Joan’s kitchen and the laughter of a crowd, especially on the occasion of her annual St. Patrick’s Day party. In Bethpage, Joan was an active member and frequent volunteer at St. Martin of Tours Church and loved to attend events sponsored by the British American Club.

Following Bernie’s death in 2001 Joan opened a new chapter, moving to Darien, CT and extending her circle of friends and activities to include her neighbors in Darien Close and St. John’s Church. Throughout her life Joan was an avid traveler and in her later years one of her greatest joys was taking her grandchildren to visit her favorite place – Ireland. Joan left a loving mark on everybody who was lucky to have the chance to meet her. She will leave a legacy of love.

Joan is survived by her children Thomas McDonnell, of Stamford CT, Michael McDonnell, his wife Suzanne and their children Michael, Daniel and Caroline, of Rockaway NJ and Susan Collins, her husband Ted, and their children Meagan, Brady and Sean, of Darien CT and many loving nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her sister Lucille and her brother Gerald.

Gallagher Funeral Home at 453 Shippan Ave, Stamford, CT, with a funeral mass at 10am on January 19 at St. Martin of Tours Church in Bethpage, NY. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Joan’s life. Obituary: Robert S. Walker IV

Bob Walker of Northport, Michigan died peacefully surrounded by family and without pain on January 13, 2016. He had been diagnosed with lung cancer in 2011 and had undergone extensive treatment and recovery, which granted him four years of joy with his friends, family and grandchildren. He died from complications related to pneumonia at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was 74.

Bob was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on February 1, 1941 to Robert Stringfellow Walker III and Ruby Shelledy Walker. His brother, Stuart Carter Walker, joined the family in 1944. Bob attended Darien High School in Connecticut and Woodberry Forest School in Virginia. Following graduation from high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps, where he served as an expert small arms instructor, thanks in part to his boyhood shooting with his nearly blind father and grandfather in Virginia.

After four years in the Marine Corps, Bob was appointed to attend the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He was honored to serve in various leadership positions, including Company Commander. His service to his country in the Marines and Navy was a source of great pride for him throughout his life. Following Annapolis, he graduated with a degree in engineering from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Bob was introduced to the love of his life, Helen Kathleen “Taffy” Terhune, by their life-long friend Margo Gillespie, when he was one of Margo’s three escorts to her debutant ball. After immediate mutual attraction, they dated for eight years. Taffy accepted his second marriage proposal, and they were married at the First Federated Church in Peoria, Illinois in 1970. They affectionately called each other “Our Darling” ever since. Taffy recalled the serious concern she had on their wedding day: the risk of running out of topics of conversation with her new husband.

Bob and Taffy were blessed with three children, Robert Stringfellow “Tad” Walker V, Christopher Carter “Chris” Walker, and Helen Heidrich “Wendy” Walker, all of whom he guided and loved dearly. He coached their soccer and lacrosse teams in elementary school and traveled to games in high school and college. He instilled sage advice to his children when it comes to matters of the heart. He advised them to remember the five most important words of a spouse: “I agree with you, dear.”

He grew up on the golf course at Wee Burn Country Club in Darien, where he recalled evenings playing holes 3-5 with his parents and brother Stuart, while their dogs chased other birdies. He loved to play a quick nine with his kids and Taffy at Northport Point. He played the best golf of his life just weeks before his death. He loved sailing, but after years in the Navy, he was glad to have others polish the brass. He often went on sailing adventures with dear friends Marian and John Niles in Europe and the Caribbean, where he enjoyed the sun, the water and the exotic scenery. He loved flying with his great friend Frank Scalcucci, sometimes over Lake Michigan in a Cessna to watch the Green Bay Packers play football. His favorite delicacy was sushi, often enjoyed in the company of his brother Stuart and his wife Keiko.

Bob spent most of his professional career working in finance and management positions with International Business Machines, first in Detroit and then in New York. He loved his work, and Taffy felt IBM was his mistress. He retired from IBM after 35 years in 2002, and IBM has never recovered.

Later in life, Bob and Taffy retired to Northern Michigan where they sang and danced to their own tunes and in community theater, including productions of My Fair Lady, Oklahoma!, and The Sound Of Music. Bob became an active member of his local church and charities. He and Taffy spent months helping to rebuild New Orleans and Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina, making over eight trips there.

Education was a top priority for Bob. He was a life-long student and was interested in finance and history, especially World War II. It was a great source of pride for him to have provided for the education of his children and others. Bob was a stalwart supporter of Woodberry Forest School, an enthusiasm inherited through its founding by his great grandfather and his grandfather’s fifty-year service as headmaster.

He dearly loved his family: his soulmate of fifty years, his three children, his three daughters-in-law, his four grandchildren, and his Labradors, Rocky and Pebbles, whom he loved to take for walks and to give “puppy pats.”

Bob was predeceased by his mother and father. He is survived by his wife, Taffy of Northport, MI; son, Tad, and his wife Season Petering of San Francisco, CA, and their daughter, Grace; son, Chris, and his wife Laura of Berkeley Heights, NJ, and their children Elisabeth, Carter and William; daughter, Wendy, and her wife Elizabeth Ghilardi of Saratoga Springs, NY; and Bob’s brother Stuart Walker and his wife Keiko Shingai of Sapporo, Japan.

Bob was grateful for the excellent doctors and nurses of Munson Medical Center and the greater Traverse City area, who cared for him in life, eased his transition to death, and counseled and comforted his family in their time of need.

Lovingly written by his children. Semper Fi!

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Church UCC, PO Box 156, Northport, MI, 49670 or Room to Read (.org).

A service at the Atwill Memorial Chapel of Northport Point will be in May or June.

Condolences may be shared with the Walker family at www.martinson.info.

He recently celebrated his 80th birthday sailing in the Caribbean with his entire family. He was an avid athlete, and one by one, he taught each child, grandchild and many of their friends how to sail, fish, golf, ski, skate, play touch football and master chess.  His first love was the water, and his happiest moments were spent racing his Shields or fishing for blues off Martha’s Vineyard.  His stories were long, and his advice never ending, a true friend and mentor to so many. One close friend wrote, “ if you were lucky enough to meet and know Phil, you were lucky enough.”

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his honor to c/o Headmaster William W. Taylor, Trinity-Pawling School Scholarship Fund, 700 Route 22, Pawling, NY. 12564

A service of remembrance will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 9th at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Darien, CT.

Loretta Poccia

Loretta Poccia was born on June 28, 1924 in Bridgeport Connecticut. She died on Jan. 27 at the age of 91 while at Stamford Hospital. Mrs. Poccia was the daughter of Paul and Julia Kocsis Mrasco. She was raised in Bridgeport and after graduating from high school she supported the war effort through her work at Bridgeport Brass. It was there that she met the love of her life, Fred Poccia, a returning war veteran. They were married in 1947. Mr. and Mrs. Poccia moved to Darien after their wedding where they remained dedicated to each other throughout their 67 years of marriage. He predeceased Mrs. Poccia nearly one year ago.

Mrs. Poccia spent her life in Darien, dedicating her time to raising her two sons, Dan and Rick and volunteering for many causes. Mrs. Poccia created a warm and welcoming home during those years for her sons and their friends, her family said. Later on, she and her husband spent the winter months in Florida, a place and time that they cherished together. Mrs. Poccia became an avid Yankee fan able to cite each player’s statistics and celebrated the team’s many victories. But more than that, she was a most loving and supporting mother, grandmother and, most recently, great grandmother. She inspired those close to her, especially her two granddaughters, with her loving nature, internal strength, sense of humor and sharp wit.

Mrs. Poccia is survived by her two sons Daniel of Darien and Rick and his wife Diana of Overland Park, Kansas, her two granddaughters, Allison Poccia of New York City and Dr. Julia Poccia Ordzowialy, her husband Dean and their two children Addison and Zachary of Chicago. Mrs. Poccia met her great-granddaughter at a family gathering in 2014. Her great grandson, Zachary, was born on Jan. 25 just two days before Mrs. Poccia’s passing. She loved seeing pictures of the newborn. Mrs. Poccia was predeceased by her sister, Marion Fiske.

Services were held on Monday, Feb. 1 at St. John Roman Catholic Church immediately followed by a burial service at Spring Grove Cemetery.

obit-alexAlexander Boris Diekmann passed away peacefully on Feb. 1, 2016, at his home in Bozeman, Montana, after a courageous battle with cancer. Alex was born Feb. 10, 1963, in Van Nuys, California, to Kurt Karl Maximilian and Marianne Edith (Barthel) Diekmann. Alex graduated from Darien High School in 1981 and received his BA from Yale University in 1985 where he met his wife, Lisa Lundal, at a freshman party in Lawrence Hall on Old Campus. Alex learned to swim when he was two years old, was a nationally ranked junior swimmer, and a member of the Yale Varsity Swim Team for four years. Alex and Lisa were married at Dwight Chapel on the Old Campus at Yale University on Nov. 22, 1991. They spent their honeymoon hiking in Patagonia and the rest of their life enjoying the great outdoors together and later with their sons, Logan and Liam.

Following Yale, Alex worked as a financial analyst for Merrill Lynch in New York and San Francisco. He received his MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management in 1989 and moved to New York shortly thereafter to work for Jones Lang Wootton, a leading global commercial real estate services and investment management firm. Alex moved to Seattle in 1994 to work for Clarion Partners until 1999 when he moved to Bozeman, Montana, and found his forever home. After moving to Montana, Alex took a position with The Trust for Public Land where he worked for 16 years until the time of his death.

Alex cherished the work that he did as senior project manager for The Trust for Public Land. He was instrumental in conserving many thousands of acres in Montana and Wyoming, including the Taylor Fork in the Gallatin Canyon, Haskill Basin near Whitefish, the Whitefish Lake Conservation Project, Three Dollar Bridge, and the restoration of O’Dell Creek in the Madison Valley.

Alex loved Montana and the Big Sky country. He enjoyed trail running, fishing, and Nordic skiing most of all. If Alex was not working or spending time with his family, he was running or skiing the trails around Bozeman with his dog, Ruby, or fishing with Logan and Liam. Alex was much too young but he will be remembered forever. He did not tell his children how to live. He lived and showed them how to do it well.

Alex is preceded in death by his father, Kurt Karl Maximilian Diekmann. He is survived by his wife, Lisa, and his sons, Logan and Liam; his mother, Marianne of Darien, Connecticut; and his sister, Tina Diekmann of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Obituary: Leo Van Munching, Jr., 89

lvm-insideLeo Van Munching, Jr., who guided Heineken’s decades-long dominance in the US imported beer market, died February 14th after a long illness.  The Darien resident was 89.

Born in 1926 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Leo and his family immigrated to the United States upon the repeal of Prohibition in 1933.  His late father, Leo, Sr., came as a representative of the Heineken brewery and eventually established the independent Van Munching & Company as the sole US importer of Heineken brands.

Leo served as a ‘Seabee’ in the 35th Special Naval Construction Battalion on Oahu, Hawaii from 1944 to 1946.  Upon discharge from the Navy, he enrolled in the University of Maryland on the G.I. Bill, earning a degree from the College of Business and Management in 1950.

He then went to work for Van Munching & Company, establishing regional offices in major markets around the country and developing both the brand imagery and the distribution network that led to Heineken’s preeminence in the expanding imported beer segment.  He married Margaret (Peggy) Pratt in 1953, and moved his quickly growing family to Chicago and Los Angeles before settling in Connecticut, where he took over as president of Van Munching & Company. He remained in that role until his retirement in 1993.

During his time with Van Munching & Company, no other brand approached Heineken’s position as the largest-selling imported beer.  After cajoling the Heineken Brewery to create a low-calorie version of its Amstel brand, Leo guided Amstel Light to the top sales spot in the imported light beer segment.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions and personal dedication to US-Netherlands trade relations, and his promotion of goodwill for the Netherlands in the United States, the Dutch government honored him with The Order of Orange-Nassau in 1982.  Six years later, the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce in the US also recognized his role in the expansion of trade between the two countries, presenting him with the George Washington Vanderbilt Award.

Leo’s efforts as a philanthropist – often anonymous – were substantial and far-reaching.  Many of his contributions were made out of appreciation for the opportunities he and his family enjoyed in America.  He became involved in the restoration of the Statue of Liberty in honor of his mother, Mia, who he said was greatly affected by seeing the statue as an arriving immigrant.

He donated Van Munching Hall, home of the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, in part to thank the university for its kind treatment of the veterans of World War II.  In addition to building the home for the University of Maryland’s business school, Leo was a member of the school’s Dean’s Advisory Council, an honorary trustee of the University of Maryland College Park Foundation Board, and in 2012, was given the Tyser Gottwals Award in honor of his outstanding service to the university.

Leo’s fervent commitment to supporting education led him to a long-standing relationship with Kolbe Cathedral High School in Bridgeport.  His support of that school, both as a benefactor and member of the Advisory Board, prompted the Diocese of Bridgeport to honor him with the Order of St. Augustine Medal of Service in 2012.  He and Peggy were also strong supporters of the St. Margaret Mary School in the Bronx.

Closer to home, Leo and Peggy established the Van Munching Rehabilitation Unit at Stamford Hospital, which helps people with chronic or disabling illnesses or injuries restore their mobility and independence. The excellent care he received at the New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center prompted Leo to make a founding donation to the Margaret M. Dyson Vision Research Institute. Leo was also a leadership donor to the construction of the new Darien Library, which opened in 2009.  He was an active supporter of several Darien-based charities, and a member of the Wee Burn Country Club.

Leo is survived by his wife Peggy, and their eight children: Leo, III (Laura) of San Francisco, CA, Jan Phillips (Chuck) of Bonita Springs, FL, Pieter of Darien, Paul (Heather) of Bath, England, Tesa of Newport, RI, Anne Ardery (Peter) of Darien, Philip (Christina) of Darien, and Christopher (Kimberly) of Darien.  He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren – Kyle, Charlie, Brennan, Annebet, Max, Anneka, Lily, Mia, Megan, William, Anna, Maggie, and Leo, IV – and two great-grandchildren, River and Rory. In addition, he is survived by his sister, Anne Wilsey, of Greenwich.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas More Church in Darien, CT on February 20th at 10:30 AM. Memorial donations can be made to the Kolbe Cathedral High School, 33 Calhoun Place, Bridgeport, CT  06604, attention Jo-Anne Jakab, Principal.

Laurel Kane

Laurel Richards Kane

Along a once-thriving stretch of Route 66 in Afton, Oklahoma, is a vintage service station where visitors from around the world would find, and later seek out, a welcome and a smile from Laurel Kane. The modest ’30s-era building was purchased by Laurel and her then-husband, David Kane, in 1998.

In 2001, Laurel and David reopened Afton Station as a welcome center for tourists, including a museum displaying Laurel’s Route 66 memorabilia and David’s collection of restored, vintage Packard automobiles. Afton Station quickly became a mainstay on Route 66 and is featured in most guidebooks that highlight Route 66’s top attractions.

Laurel welcomed visitors from around the world. Her vast knowledge of the “Mother Road,” her kind nature and quick wit endeared her to those who stopped by Afton Station, making her a Route 66 celebrity. “Oh, we love our visitors,” Laurel was known to say. Since opening Afton Station, Laurel reckoned she greeted over 7,000 visitors a year.

Laurel, a resident of Tulsa, passed away at the age of 69, on January 28, 2016.

Her dedication to Route 66 began as a side interest to her other great passion, collecting vintage postcards. The many Route 66 postcards in her collection inspired her to reconnect with the iconic highway, eventually leading to a family road trip in 1997. During this trip, Laurel, David and their daughter, Sarah, travelled the entire length of Route 66 in a 1957 Packard. Following that trip, the Kanes decided to retire in Oklahoma.

Before moving west, Laurel lived in Darien, Connecticut, with her family for 27 years, including several years in one of the town’s oldest homes built in 1705. While there she served as a volunteer and supporter of many community organizations, including Darien High School’s Theatre 308, Appalachian House and the First Congregational Church of Darien.

Most mornings Laurel could be found in Darien’s Sugar Bowl Luncheonette enjoying a meal and chatting with her friends. She was also active with the Silver Lake Conference Center, home of the Connecticut Conference – of the United Church of Christ Outdoor Ministries Center, where Sarah attended summer camp and later worked on the camp staff. Silver Lake would grow to become a very special place to the Kane family.

Prior to Darien, Laurel and David also have lived in Philadelphia, where they owned a small farm, Buffalo, N.Y., and Okinawa, Japan before that. Laurel was a proud alumna of the University of Kentucky – College of Education, where she supported academic scholarships for many years as a member of the President’s Circle.

Laurel is survived by her daughter, Sarah, of Evanston, Ill.; and her ex-husband, David, of Grove, Okla. A celebration of her life will be held this spring at Afton Station, details to be announced. Donations in memory of Laurel will be accepted by the Silver Lake Conference Center, 223 Low Rd., Sharon, CT, 06069. www.silverlakect.org
