Obituary: Jacqueline Pierrot Trautmann

Jacqueline Pierrot Trautmann, a longtime resident of Westport, CT died peacefully in her sleep on November 5th after a prolonged illness.

Jacqueline was a caring, loving mother, grandmother, wife and neighbor.  She is pre-deceased by her beloved husband Rudi, survived by her sons Carl and Erik, her much adored grandsons (to whom she always insisted on sending “good vibes”) Nicholas, William and Andrew, and her daughters-in-law Tami and Irene.

Carl and Irene Trautmann and their kids, Nicholas, William and Andrew are long-time Darien residents.

Born in Paris, France in 1931, Jacqueline survived German occupied France as a child living on her grandparent’s farm where on several occasions German soldiers garrisoned and battled the French resistance.  After the war, she met and married Rudi when they both worked at a Paris advertising agency.  Shortly thereafter, they immigrated to the US, crossing the Atlantic on the famed SS Constitution ocean liner.  With Rudi working as a graphic artist, they settled in Westport in the late 50’s when it was known as an artist community.

Arriving in the states without knowing a single word of English, Jacqueline worked hard to learn the language eventually mastering the NY Times Crossword puzzle, even the infamous Sunday edition which she would complete in a single sitting-in pen!

Jacqueline will be remembered for always putting the needs of others before her own, being a spirited and passionate debater of politics and for the best potato salad our family has ever tasted.  We love you.

A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday November 29th from 3pm-6pm at the home of Carl and Irene Trautmann of Darien, CT.

Obituary: Michael A. FitzMaurice, 61

Michael A. FitzMaurice, 61, of Darien, died in Southbury on December, 16, 2014 following a 7 month battle with cancer.
Born in Stamford on August 5, 1953 to the late Bill and Mimi Rich FitzMaurice, he was raised in a close-knit family in the Shippan area. FitzMaurice attended Christ the King Prep School in Southport, and graduated from Stamford High School. He received a degree in Architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology. FitzMaurice loved Long Island Sound and was an avid sailor who sailed out of the Stamford and Noroton Yacht Clubs. His passion for sailing and his family life became entwined when he met Ann Metayer of Darien at the Stamford Yacht Club.
Mike and Ann celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary earlier this year. A devoted family man, Mr. FitzMaurice took great pride in the activities and accomplishments of his two children, Will and Kate FitzMaurice of Darien. He was an active presence in their lives and the lives of their friends.  He encouraged all their interests, but as a talented woodworker and meticulous builder himself, perhaps nothing pleased him more than when both Will and Kate followed similar paths using those skills in theatrical design. FitzMaurice’s talents enriched many Darien youth through his involvement with both Boy and Girl Scouts. He happily volunteered his time as a merit badge counselor and adult leader in Darien Troop 35 and contributed countless hours to Eagle Service projects and to the St. John Youth Group.

FitzMaurice followed his grandfather into the construction business and was one of those lucky people who loved his work. As a senior project manager in interior architecture for 35 years for various New York and Westchester firms, most recently with the Talisen Construction Company of New York, he worked on some of the most iconic buildings in the metropolitan region. These included the Random House building in midtown Manhattan and the Goldman Sachs building in Jersey City; as well as the restoration and renovation of the historic Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum in New York City.

A bon vivant and a cheerful companion, FitzMaurice was always ready with a smile and a helping hand. He enjoyed a wide circle of friends who will miss his quick wit and jovial demeanor. He loved spending time with family and friends in the mountains. As a frequent visitor to the Catskills, FitzMaurice was the ultimate houseguest. During the day he’d help out with projects big and small (often bringing his own tools), and at night he’d cook a memorable meal for everyone. Yet as gregarious as he was, he also cherished quiet time, either sitting at Pear Tree Point watching the action on Long Island Sound, or working on crossword puzzles.

In addition to his wife and children, FitzMaurice is survived by his brother Tom and his wife, Cindy, of Emmaus, Pennsylvania, and their children Megan and Matthew; his sister Taffy and her husband, Chris Powderly, of Southbury and their daughters Anne and Maggie; his in-laws Jean and Al Metayer of Darien; his brother- and sister-in-law Tom and Charlene Metayer of Branford; his sister- and brother-in-law Mary Lynn and Marc Raggenbass of Zollikon, Switzerland; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014 at 10 a.m. at St. John Church, Darien.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the FitzMaurice Family Education Fund in care of Attorney Therese A. FitzMaurice, 302 Bucks Hill Road, Southbury, CT 06488 or in Mike’s name to Darien EMS Post 53, P.O. Box 2066, Darien, CT 06820. Arrangements made by Carpino Funeral Home, Southbury.

Peter Richard Constable

Peter Richard Constable, of Fort Collins, CO, died at Fort Collins Health Care Center on November 14, after a long and valiant struggle with multiple sclerosis. He was 53.

Born on August 30, 1961, he grew up in Darien, CT, graduating from Darien High School in 1979. He worked for several years at Chuck’s Steak House and was part of the original staff at Backstreet Restaurant in 1986.

During childhood camping trips, Peter acquired a deep love for the open spaces of the American West, which influenced his decision to leave the East coast in 1989. Moving first to Durango, Peter also lived in Denver before settling in Fort Collins. He always loved the outdoors and working with his hands, becoming a skilled roofer and welder until illness forced his early retirement. In his spare time, he enjoyed target shooting, whitewater rafting, and was an avid Harley-Davidson rider. He had a gentle demeanor and a dry, incisive sense of humor, which will be remembered, and missed, by many.

He is survived by his father Richard Constable, his siblings Tom and Martha, his niece Eleanor McGuirk, and his beloved cat Dharma.

A family memorial celebration will be held at a future date. Donations may be made in Peter’s memory to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, P.O. Box 4527, New York, NY 10163, or at nationalmssociety.org.
